Claus O. Wilke is a professor of Integrative Biology at The University of Texas at Austin. He holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. Claus is the author or coauthor of over 170 scientific publications, covering topics in computational biology, mathematical modeling, bioinformatics, evolutionary biology, protein biochemistry, virology, and statistics. He has also authored several popular R packages used for data visualization, such as cowplot and ggridges, and he is a contributor to the package ggplot2.

Gute Datenvisualisierungen zu erstellen ist nicht einfach - gute Publikationen darüber zu schreiben auch nicht: Dieses Buch leistet beides und ich kann es allen nur empfehlen, deren Job das Erstellen von Datenvisualisierungen umfasst. Unabhängig von Vorkenntnissen und Erfahrungen.Datenvisualisierung ist ein Thema, wo alle selbst Erfahrung haben, die mit Daten arbeiten, und (glauben) mitreden (zu) können. Es gibt kaum formale Beweise, selten eindeutig beste Lösungen, ästhetische Präferenzen spielen auch (aber eben bei weitem nicht nur) eine Rolle und experimentelle Erkenntnisse sind nicht immer leicht auf neue Situationen zu übertragen. Das führt dazu, dass in der Ausbildung von Statistikern, Datenwissenschaftlern, u.ä. das Thema Visualisierung zwar vorkommt aber häufig viel weniger strukturiert und weniger auf Prinzipien basierend präsentiert wird als bspw. beim Thema Regression o.ä. Ich selbst habe viele Prinzipien erst durch verstreute Referenzen und besonders auch durch jahrelange Erfahrung selbst gelernt.Das Buch von Claus Wilke füllt diese Lücke und überzeugt dabei besonders durch die Art, wie das Thema präsentiert wird: Jedes Kapitel startet mit der Beschreibung von konkreten Herausforderungen (bspw. der Visualisierung von Anteilen oder Zeitreihen o.ä.), zeigt dann typische Beispiele, kontrastiert gute mit schlechten Visualisierungen und leitet daraus sowohl ganz konkrete Tipps wie auch ein paar (relativ) allgemeine Prinzipien ab. Dabei wird ein guter Kompromiss gefunden zwischen der Diskussion von vielfältigen möglichen Lösungen einerseits und deutlichen Empfehlungen andererseits. Damit erhalten Leser*innen eine klare Anleitung, wie sie zu guten Visualisierungen kommen, und es wird ihnen trotzdem der Raum gegeben diese Visualisierungen noch zu variieren und für ihre Daten besonders anzupassen.Daher kann ich jedem nur empfehlen, zumindest mal onlinen einen Blick auf das Buch zu werfen. Der Kauf des gedruckten Buches lohnt sich aber auch allemal, weil es sich hervorragend dazu eignet, es durchzublättern und immer wieder neue ansprechende Grafiken zu entdecken.
